Car Maintenance

"A Land Rover is not a car, it's a lifestyle!"

People ask us whether we need to do a lot of maintenance on our Landy.
Our answer is always "Yes and No".
Yes, if you count the number of visits to a garage, and the hours spent checking and fixing things.
No, because the engine runs very well, it takes us everywhere, nothing serious broke down until now and most of the maintenance is to prevent us to get in trouble in the future.

However, we have seen our share of African industrial parks and spare parts centres and already have overnighted a couple of times in workshops which wasn't too bad...

The fact is, African roads just break your vehicle, no matter how carefull you drive or how well you prepared yourself. Springs break, bushes wear, exhaust-pipes break or come loose and tires go flat.

This all sounds bad, but in fact it isn't: it's quite enjoyable to work on the car yourself, get some help from other travelers or see how the African bush-mechanics tackle a problem without using spare-parts... It is part of the trip! It is part of Africa!
